Interests:
Modern Latin America with a primary emphasis in Caribbean religions and cultures.

Current Research:
I recently completed a monograph titled Governing Spirits: Religion, Miracles and Spectacles in Cuba and Puerto Rico, 1898-1956 (UNC Press, 2007). A brief description and other details are available through the publisher's website.

I am now conducting research on nineteenth-century Cuban Spiritism. My aim is to understand the ethnogenetic dimensions of this practice and to explore its role in the mobilization of anti-colonial insurgents and veterans of the War of Independence (1895-1898).
